Community campaigner Michael Andjelkovic is calling on the state government to rectify what he describes as a “car park crisis” outside Macarthur’s newest train stations.

Mr Andjelkovic has been advocating for more parking spaces to be made available at Leppington and Edmondson Park train stations since 2016.

The Prestons resident met with state Transport Minister Andrew Constance to discuss his concerns in May.

Now, nearly four months later, Mr Andjelkovic said nothing had been done to fix the issue.

“Commuters are struggling in so many ways and the government is doing nothing,” he said.

“They need to fix the car park situation at Leppington and Edmondson Park stations.

“I’ve spoken to commuters who can’t park at either station by 7.30am and the roads are still lined with cars at 7pm.”

Mr Andjelkovic said 850 parking spots were currently available at Leppington station.

“A million people are expected to come into south-west Sydney in the next 20 years – how does 850 spots cater for that,” he said.

“There are only 400 spots at Edmondson Park station too.”

The state government allocated funding to investigate the overcrowding issue in its 2018/19 budget.

However, Mr Andjelkovic believed this was a “taxpayer-funded smokescreen” to hide the issue in the lead-up to next year’s state election.

“The car parking crisis affects the lives of Leppington and Edmondson Park commuters every day,” Mr Andjelkovic said.

“The lack of response by the government is very disappointing.”

However, a Transport for NSW spokesman has watered down concerns and said investigations into the issue were continuing.

The spokesman said the government was working to provide more than 1200 car spaces at Leppington and Edmondson Park train stations, and investigations were still in their early stages.

“Transport for NSW recently met with Camden and Liverpool councils to gather further information to identify appropriate short, medium and long term car park options for these stations,” he said.

“We are committed to making travel for our customer easier.”

The spokesman said the government was trialling ‘on-demand transport services’ for customers at Edmondson Park station.

“Services are operating during the morning and afternoon weekday peak periods,” he said.

“On-demand public transport allows customers to book transport from or near their home to a local transport hub or landmark for a low set price.

“This will allow them to leave their cars at home.”

The on-demand service, provided in Edmondson Park by Interline Bus Services, allows commuters to book a trip, via an app, as close as five minutes before their intended departure time, subject to availability.

One-way trips cost $2.60. Concession prices are available.
