GREENS AND LABOR PUSH FOR BAN ON DEVELOPERS IN COUNCIL.

The NSW government must consider a developer ban to pass measures for COVID-safe council elections in a political push to put the agenda back on the table.

The upper house voted on Tuesday to ban property developers from running for councils in legislative amendments tied up with running elections in a pandemic-safe way, in a late night Greens-Labor move.

One Nation MLC Mark Latham opposed the amendment on the basis that “people should not be rubbed out of our democratic system.”

“You can run through a long list of people who technically might not be suitable to local government service and say, ‘We’re here to rub them out.’ But in a democracy people have the basic, fundamental freedom and right to run for elected office,” he said.

The Greens Media Release on the Property Developer Ban amendment. “A truly independent elected council should be able to listen to the community with no significant conflicts of interest. This just isn't possible where you have a financial stake in (over)development."

I have to agree with David Shoebridge " This is a bill dealing with integrity measures in Local Government, and the most important one of these is getting rid of conflicted property developers from elected council positions,”

After considering the Information presented to Parliament I support the review of the Legislation regarding having Property Developers and Real Estate Agents banned from running for Local Council on that basis of potential Conflicts of Interest.
